Royal Exchange Assurance, the world's first marine insurer is granted legal status. Life and fire insurance are quickly added to its portfolio, whilst later as a result of the industrial revolution new types of insurance such as accident or casualty are added.

Sun Life is founded in Great Britain.
1816
The Mutuelle de L'Assurance contre L'Incendie(MACL) begins operating in Paris. The following year the Ancienne Mutuelle is founded.
1821
Guardian Assurance is established in London, providing fire and life insurance.
1828 - 1889
In this period the three companies which later form the UAP Group, are established.
1844
Equity & Law was formed.
