Pet choking

If your pet is choking on an unknown foreign object.

  • Check airway by using one hand to hold the animal's mouth open and using the other hand to pull the tongue out as far as possible. Look in the mouth to see if you can locate an obstruction. If a foreign body is seen, take the pet to the vets immediately. Sedation or anaesthesia is often required to remove the object safely.
  • Never use pliers as there is the potential to do a lot of damage.

If your pet has a ball stuck at the back of the throat do not try and use pliers as this might push the ball further down your pet's throat. Instead place your fingers at the base of the jaw, apply pressure inwards and upwards to expel the ball.
