Tips to prevent accidents

Prevention is better than cure, so train your dog to obey simple commands like come, stay, no and leave. This could save it from a road traffic accident, getting into a fight or eating something poisonous. Check your dog's eyes, ears, nose, mouth, paws, and coat and general appearance daily.

1. Be aware of areas in the house which could be dangerous for pets:

• Cookers
• Unguarded fires
• Trailing wires

2. Be aware of areas outside the house which may be dangerous for pets:

• Uncovered pools
• Gaps in fences
• Balconies or roofs
• Garages
• Open gates

3. Keep all rubbish bins securely closed.

4. Keep all medicines, especially sugar coated tablets, safely out of reach.

5. Keep all cleaning fluids and other toxic substances safely out of reach. (e.g. slug pellets, weed killer, rat poison, antifreeze and pesticides)

6. Avoid unsupervised access to children's toys.

7. Avoid access to objects of curiosity such as:

• Fishing hooks
• Sewing needles and thread
• Pipe cleaners
• Plastic bags

8. Do not leave your pet in cars or confined spaces in warm or hot weather.

9. Keep dogs on a lead on a public road. Do not allow them to roam the streets.

10. Ensure that all members of the family know where your pet's First Aid Guide and First Aid Kit are kept.
