Fleas
As with worms, almost all cats will pick up fleas at some point in their lives when they are out and about. You will usually notice the problem because of your cat scratching but you may also notice small brown spots or insects crawling through its fur. Fleas are a problem no matter how clean your keep your home and how clean your cat keeps itself and the fleas you see on your pet are only part of the problem. Fortunately, there are now products available for both elimination and prevention.
Adulticides target grown, egg laying fleas and generally work within 24 hours. Some fleas that are licked up very shortly before the treatment is given can lay eggs before they die causing the problem to recur but this can be resolved with Insect Growth Regulators. These will prevent flea eggs from hatching so if any are laid within the 24 hours following treatment, they will merely fall from your pet and be vacuumed up when you are cleaning. This integrated approach is now offered by single products which are readily available. Please be sure to follow the instructions carefully.
