Taking Your Kitten or Cat Home

When you collect your kitten or cat, it is important that you have a cat-carrier to hand. Cats can escape from cardboard carriers very easily so always use a manufactured case made from plastic or wicker. Cover the bottom of the case with newspaper in case of accidents. You can make your cat even more secure by fastening the seat belt around the carrier. Do not transport your cat loose in the car as their curiosity will lead them to explore. Ensure that the car is well ventilated at all times and never leave your cat alone in a hot car if you stop for a break.

When home, your cat will need a bed in a draught free area preferably away from the main through traffic of the house. You will also need a litter tray and scoop, food and water dishes and grooming tools.

Cats have a very strong territorial instinct and because if this, it is essential that your cat learns your home is its domain. To do this, allow the cat to become accustomed to one room before allowing it into the next, thus slowly expanding the range of rooms in which the cat is allowed. Be sure to watch out for signs of discomfort that your cat will display in unfamiliar territory. You may help the process by taking a handkerchief and using it to pick up your cat's scent from around its face and then rubbing the cloth on some furniture in the unfamiliar room. This will help spread your cat's scent and build up its confidence.

Your cat will need to be kept indoors for around 2 weeks. At this time, be sure that you accompany your cat outside to reassure them as they learn their new surroundings. Try to allow your cat outside just before feeding time to give them encouragement not to go too far. Also, it is also highly recommended that you microchip your pet for easy identification, just in case they choose to wander into unfamiliar territory.
