Socialising

Socialisation is essential for your kitten or cat to become confident around other animals and humans. The best time for the process to begin is when the kitten is between two and seven weeks old. This does mean that by the time you collect your kitten from its mother's owners, the socialising process is largely complete and you should make enquiries to be certain that the correct efforts have been made as this will make your task a great deal easier. Kittens raised in adoption centres are generally well socialised as the staff there are aware of their needs. Between two and seven weeks, kittens need to be exposed to a variety of humans and their experiences should be made pleasant.

This will give them confidence when meeting others. Kittens also like to become used to the smells of a household and time taken to introduce them to these is time well spent. It is generally thought that the socialisation period ends after around twelve weeks and it can be difficult to overcome this problem. However, there are now products such as plug-in pheromone dispensers that can assist your cat when they are having difficulties such as toileting and scratching in the house when they hear strange noises or visitors arrive. If problems persist, consult your vet for advice.
