Fitness and Exercise
All dogs and humans need to keep fit and active and owning a dog is great way to keep yourself in shape with enjoyable walks as well as preventing accidents taking place in the home. Exercise is essential for dogs from the time they are puppies through to old age although the type and amount of exercise will vary depending on the age of your dog. Your breeder will be able to give you information regarding the exercise needs of your particular breed of dog as certain breeds require mental exercise as well as physical. Try to make sure that your dog's walk provides a combination of on-lead walking and off-lead exercise. As a dog can usually run much faster than its owner, they gain a great benefit from being allowed to run at their own pace when not on the lead, but be certain that the area you choose to let your dog off the lead in, is away from traffic, and other animals, particularly livestock. An alternative to off-lead exercise is offered by extendable leads that can allow your dog to roam more freely while still being safely under your control.
As you exercise your puppy, make sure that the games you play are as stress free as possible. As the puppy is still developing, its muscles and joints are still weak and any activity that involves stopping from, or turning at, high speeds can cause excessive physical stress and this is even more important when it comes to large breeds of dog. Exercise should be good for your dog and should not result in a trip to the vets. Also, remember that as a growing animal, your puppy will need lots of rest between walks.
