Chewing

Chewing for dogs is slightly different than teething. Teething occurs when the first teeth are making their way through the gums. By the time chewing begins, these teeth are falling out. Chewing tends to happen due to the discomfort that dogs experience when their second teeth are settling into place as well as taking place because dogs have a tendency to explore their environment using their mouths. However, it can also occur as a result of boredom, attention seeking behaviour and separation anxiety.

To prevent this behaviour, there are several things that you as the owner can do:

  1. Make sure that your dog has toys that are designed to be chewed safely. Manufacturers now make soft toys that to not crack or splinter.
  2. Provide a supply of chews for your dog. Rasks are available as are dental rawhide chews, chew sticks and more.
  3. Provide toys that give your dog entertainment. Kong balls are now made that can be filled with treats giving your dog a challenge as he tries to get the rewards.

You need to be sure that you reward your dog for chewing the correct things and make sure that his chews are always readily available. This way, if an incorrect item is used, you can direct your dog's attention to a permitted item and give praise and reward when his attention is redirected successfully.

Also, make sure that any valuable items are safely out of reach in the event that your dog is left alone. Without your presence, there is no-one to prevent incorrect chewing and doing so will keep any damage to a minimum. Problem items tend to be shoes, belts, wallets (leather items) and hard plastic items such as electrical goods.

Products are available that make the item being chewed taste unpleasant. This has been found to be effective but it is necessary to apply the product regularly. The best way to control chewing is to direct your dog's attention onto its own items using the appropriate training techniques.
