Applying an emergency muzzle to dogs

A dog that is injured, frightened and in pain may bite. The following procedure should not be carried out if your pet has breathing difficulties.

  1. Approach the animal from the rear.
  2. Make half a reef knot in the centre of a tape/bandage leaving a loop below the knot.
  3. Slip the loop over the muzzle and tighten the knot just sufficiently to hold the mouth closed.
  4. Bring the ends under the muzzle, cross them over and bring behind the ears, then tie in a simple knot.
