Burns and Scalds

Dogs can burn themselves for a variety of reasons. They can get scalded with hot water, get chemical burns or chew a live electrical flex. In all cases this is extremely serious.

Always seek veterinary attention within 24 hours even if your pet may appear unscathed. The problem with burns is that it takes a few days for the skin to die off and become infected, by which time your pet may be very ill.

Treatment:

  • Scalding - bathe the area immediately with tepid water. Keep the wound clean and do not apply any ointments/creams/butter. Also do not clip hair or burst any blisters.
  • Chemical burns - wash off as much of the chemical from the coat and skin with mild baby shampoo. If the dog has absorbed a lot through their skin take him to the vet.
  • Electrical flexes - this can be fatal. Turn off the electricity before handling the pup. If the gums are burnt bathe them immediately with tepid water. Your pup may be in shock so will need to be hospitalised immediately.
