Athlete's Foot & fungal infections

Athlete's Foot, Ringworm (Dhobi Itch), and related fungal skin complaints are very common, especially in humid climates. Athlete's Foot and Ringworm are caused by the same type of fungus, so if you develop one you are at a higher risk of developing the other. These fungal infections can also spread to other areas of the body, and to other people.

These fungi cause the infected area to become red and itchy. Typically Ringworm forms a circular red scaly patch, and Athlete's Foot causes flaky itchy skin between the toes.

Athlete's Foot and Ringworm can both be treated with over the counter creams, sprays, or powders. Treatment will usually last for several weeks, and should be continued for a week after the infection has apparently disappeared.

The NHS Direct website contains more information on Athlete's Foot and other fungal infections.
