Hazards, illnesses, and diseases abroad
HIV and Hepatitis
The virus' causing these diseases are transmitted in bodily fluids through immediate contact in unsafe sex or from medical procedures involving unclean needles or surgical instruments.
Both these diseases can cause serious long term problems. Vaccinations are available for Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B, but not for Hepatitis C or HIV. The Hepatitis viruses can cause severe liver damage or complete liver failure amongst other problems. The effects of Hepatitis infection may not become apparent for months or years after the infection has occurred, and so many people carry and spread the virus without knowing it. Likewise HIV can take a several months or years before any symptoms become evident.
Some countries may not have the same availability or standard of sexual health products as in the United Kingdom, so it is best to take a supply of condoms if casual sex is likely. Likewise you can take a pre-packed sterile kit of needles, syringes, and sutures, which can be used by medical personnel on you. These are readily available from pharmacies and specialist travel clinics.
The NHS Direct website contains more information on HIV and Hepatitis.
The NHS Direct advice line (0845 4647) is available 24 hours a day and can be accessed from abroad by adding the UK international dialling code (00 44845 4647).
