Public liability insurance
What is it? Protection for your business against accidental injury and property damage claims from your customers, visitors, or people you visit. It covers any legal fees, the cost of compensation claims and the cost of repairing or replacing damaged property.
Who needs it? All businesses. This is because most businesses interact with the public in some way.
Is it a legal requirement? No, but some larger companies will require you to have it before they work with you. These include places like public or government bodies.
What are the cover levels? £1 Million to £10 million (depending on your occupation).
Professional indemnity insurance
What is it? It covers you for the cost of paying compensation and/or defence costs if a client thinks you’ve made a mistake, provided negligent services, or given bad advice that has led to them losing money.
Who needs it? Any business that offers professional services or advice to clients. This includes businesses like consultants, accountants etc.
Is it a legal requirement? No, but most accredited professional or licensing bodies will require you to have it as a condition of becoming a member.
What are the cover levels? £100,000 to £5 million.
Employers' liability insurance
What is it? Cover for your business if any of your employees ends up accidentally injured or sick because of their job.
Who needs it? Any business that has people – in any capacity – working for them.
Is it a legal requirement? Yes, it’s legally mandatory under the Employers’ Liability Act 1969 if you have people working for you. If you’re found breaking this law, you’ll be fined £2,500 by HMRC for every day you are uninsured.
What are the cover levels? £10 million as standard.
Business contents insurance
What is it? It can help with the cost of replacing any lost, stolen, or accidentally damaged contents of your shop, office, or similar bricks-and-mortar premises. This includes stock, fixtures and fittings, and employees’ personal belongings. It also covers theft of any money from a till or safe.
Who needs it? Any business that has stock or contents. Most businesses that have contents are retail-based (i.e., anyone selling something), but freelancers can also benefit from this cover if they have any equipment that’s vital to business operations.
Is it a legal requirement? No, but if you have, or are looking to get, a business premises, there is a good chance that a mortgagor will ask you to have it.
What are the cover levels? Varying depending on the individual contents being covered.
