What is courier insurance?
Courier insurance is what you need if you drive a van to carry other people’s goods or materials in return for payment. AXA’s courier van insurance is designed to protect all type of light haulage work – from furniture removers and leaflet distributors to delivery drivers and more.
Why choose AXA’s van insurance for couriers?
You’ll get cover for damage to your or another’s van as the result of an accident, as well as damage caused by theft or fire. You’ll also be covered in case of broken windscreens or windows, theft of personal belongings, misfuelling and medical expenses.
In addition to the minimum insurance cover for loss, damage or injury caused to others you need to have to drive your van on the road, you’ll be covered for loss or damage to your own van too, in the event of an accident or after a fire or theft.
Approved repair network if you make a claim
You can call out our AXA-approved repairers to:
- Lifetime guarantee on repairs
- Mis-fuelling if you put in the wrong fuel - no excess applies, but there’s a limit of cover of £250
- Cover for replacing locks and keys in the event of loss or theft
- Roadside recovery following an accident, including transport for you and any passengers back home or to the intended destination
Guaranteed courtesy van
While your van is in for repairs at an approved garage following an accident, you’ll also get a small courtesy van for the duration of the time it takes to fix it. Please be aware that this small courtesy van may not be an exact like-for-like replacement to your own van.
Protection for your valuables
Cover for built-in music, navigation and entertainment equipment in your van. If they’re lost or stolen, we’ll pay towards replacing them. Plus, we’ll put £250 towards the cost of any other personal belongings lost or damaged while in your van.
Do I need courier insurance?
If you use your van to pick up and/or deliver goods which aren’t your own (whether it’s to one destination or multiple locations) then normal business use isn’t suitable for you. You’ll need what is called ‘hire and reward’ use instead, which is included as standard when you buy AXA courier van insurance.
It’ll provide you with the right cover to carry other people’s goods and materials from one place to another. If you’re involved in occupations like parcel delivery, light haulage, mail order delivery etc – then this is what you’ll need.
Frequently asked questions
How much does van insurance cost?
The cost of courier van insurance depends on several factors, including;
- How many miles you drive annually
- The areas of the country you drive in
- The number and experience of drivers
- How old your van is
- What your van is worth
- Where your van is kept overnight
- Your age
- Your driving experience/history
Will my policy include cover for the things I am carrying?
No. It won’t include goods in transit insurance. If you want to insure these, or get cover for the tools and equipment you use for work, then take a look at our business insurance page.
Will my policy include public liability insurance?
No, it won’t. Public liability insurance can protect your business against claims to cover damages and legal costs that people may make against your business. It isn’t covered by our van insurance policy, but you can learn more about what we have to offer on our public liability page.
What’s the difference between courier and haulage insurance?
Courier work is usually a term used to describe fast, direct and small package deliveries whereas haulage is a term used to describe carriage in bulk or over longer distances where time pressure isn’t as great.
However, all of this is covered when you take out our courier van insurance.
If you’ve got questions relating to your specific policy, then get in touch with us on 0330 159 1521◆ and we can chat you through your options.
What can I add to my AXA courier van insurance?
Increase your protection with these add-ons.
Legal assistance cover
Up £100,000 cover for legal expenses, to help you claim compensation for ‘uninsured losses’ – if you’re in an accident that’s not your fault.
(Uninsured losses are ones that aren’t covered by your policy, like policy excess, personal injury, loss of income or damage to property in your van.)
If you’re prosecuted for an event related to using/owing your van, we will cover your legal fees and give you access to confidential legal advice, 24/7.
Breakdown cover
With breakdown cover, AXA will pick you up and get you back on the road. Choose from three levels of coverage: AXA Roadside, AXA Rescue or AXA Rescue and HomeStart.
Trailer cover
If you need to tow a trailer attached to your van, our van insurance will offer you the minimum cover you need to do this legally.
With our trailer cover add on, we’ll increase your cover to insure you for loss or damage to a trailer attached to your van – if the trailer is worth less than £5,000.
