We know it’s a stress and a worry when your car starts clanking or gives up the ghost when you’ve got places to be. So, here are some reminders of what to do and who to call if your car breaks down and you find yourself stuck.
What do I do if I’ve broken down?
-
Put your hazards on
Let other drivers know you’ve broken down.
-
Go left and take a breath
Be aware of your surroundings and pull over to the left side of the road, if you can. If on a motorway, aim to stop on the hard shoulder or emergency area.
-
Get out safely, away from traffic
You and your passengers should get out on the left-hand side of your car and stand well clear of the road and traffic. If you’ve got a hi-vis jacket or vest, pop it on so other drivers can see you clearly.
If you have a warning triangle, place it 45 metres (about 150ft) behind your car – about 60 footsteps. But don’t do this if you breakdown on the motorway or dual carriageway. Just get behind the safety barrier, away from the fast-moving traffic. If you can’t do that, then stay put, belt up and call 999 to ask for the police and let them know where you are. Alternatively, use an SOS phone. If there isn’t one close by (they’re a mile apart), you can call 0300 123 5000, or use your car’s eCall SOS button, if it was made after 2018.
