Public Liability Insurance

  • Most businesses need public liability cover these days. It protects you against accidental injury and property damage claims from your customers, visitors or people you visit.

  •

    Standard policy benefits

    • Up to £5 million protection
    • Covers legal defence costs and compensation you owe
    • Temporary staff covered too - up to 50 days a year free
    • £250 compensation per day for court attendance
    • 24 hour legal hotline

    Optional covers

    • Employers' liability
    • Tools
    • Computers/business equipment
    • Hired plant equipment
    • Works under contract
    • Loss of earnings after an accident

  • Why do I need public liability cover?

Public liability claims can happen to anyone. While you do your best to get everything right, a minor slip-up or accident can lead to claims running into the tens of thousands of pounds.

    You go to people

Do you work on other people’s property? Or do you visit clients and suppliers? Here are the kinds of accident claims that can arise:

    • You’re a joiner who has knocked a nail into a hidden pipe
    • You’re a gardener who’s left tools on a veranda and someone’s tripped over them

    People come to you

Do you have customers visiting you? Can members of the public access your yard, car park or other area connected to your business? Here are some examples of claims:

    • You’re a hairdresser and a customer burns themselves on hot straighteners
    • You’re a consultant working from home and a visitor  trips over uneven paving

    You supply food and drink

You are also protected if you accidentally breach food safety or consumer protection laws. Imagine what would happen if:

    • You run a mobile food business and accidentally use out of date ingredients
    • You‘re a caterer and someone gets scalded by a hot drink you give them
  • Business Guardian Angel

  • How can I tailor my policy?

When you get a quote, you’ll have the option of adding other covers your business needs – for an addition to your premium. Have a think about the questions below.

  • If anyone works for you, you need to have employers' liability insurance as well. While public liability cover is a good idea, employers' liability cover is required by law in this case.
  • We insure all types of equipment from a screwdriver or office computer right up to a JCB. You'll also have the option of including cover for repair or replacement of hired equipment that's lost or damaged in your care.
Just choose cover for tools, plant and equipment and/or hired-in-plant.
  • We'll cover any equipment you rely on for your work. Just choose cover for tools, plant and equipment.
  • If a building or site you're working on is destroyed or damaged part way through a job, you could lose the work you've done - and materials too. Select contract works and cover the amount you'd expect to lose on any one job.
  • A small business income is often down to the work of one or two key people. You could face a drop in earnings if you suffer an accident and need to take time off to recover. Choose personal accident, and you'd get a weekly wage or a lump sum (as you prefer) to keep things going.
