    Beauty salon insurance FAQs

Why do I need insurance for my beauty business?

While your primary focus is on pampering your clients, there are lots of accidents and incidents that could leave you seriously out of pocket if you don’t have insurance in place:

    • Your client sustains an allergic reaction after getting her eyebrows threaded and tinted at your salon

    • Your advertising sign outside your shop blows away and damages your customer’s car

    • A member of your team suffers from work-related dermatitis due to the treatments she’s been carrying out at your work

    • A fire breaks out at your beauty salon because essential oils had not been washed out of some used towels properly – and they burst into flames

What type of beauty salons and beauticians do we cover?

Thanks to our range of business insurance products, we can insure a wide range of beauty businesses, including:

    • Beauticians

    • Beauty salons

    • Beauty therapists

    • Cosmetic and makeup artists

    • Hair and beauty consultants

    • Hair and beauty salons

    • Manicurists and pedicurists

    • Nail technicians

And no matter whether you run your own salon, or you’re freelance, mobile or self-employed, we’ve got you covered.

    What beauty treatments are covered?

We should be able to insure you quickly online if you offer the following types of beauty treatments:

    • Manicures

    • Pedicures

    • Eyelash tinting

    • Eyebrow shaping and threading

    • Facial massages

    • Skin cleansing

    • Waxing

    • Ear piercing

    • Makeup

If you carry out other types of beauty treatments, for example if you offer body piercing or permanent makeup treatments, or have sunbeds in your shop, we may not be able to insure you.

What covers do I need for my beauty business?

As a beauty business, there are two ways you can get protected with AXA.

You can either choose from our standard business insurance, which can include public liability (with treatment cover), employers’ liability and professional indemnity insurance. Or you can opt for AXA Shop Insurance, where you can also add the likes of buildings and contents insurance.

To help you decide, here’s more information on AXA Business Insurance and AXA Shop Insurance – as well as the types of covers you’ll be able to choose from.

    Option 1: AXA Shop Insurance

With our shop and retail insurance, public liability is the only cover that’s included as standard. From there, you simply pick and choose the covers you want – and make up an insurance policy that meets the needs of your beauty business.

What can I include with shop insurance?

    Public liability insurance

This will cover your legal liability for accidental injury or property damage claims made against your beauty business. And with AXA Shop Insurance, it’s included as standard.

    Treatment cover

As a beauty business offering treatments like eyelash tinting and waxing, treatment cover is something you may want to consider – it’ll cover your legal liability for damage or injury caused by physical or cosmetic treatments.

    Work away cover

Ever go to clients’ houses to do their makeup or wax their eyebrows? This will cover your legal liability for any damage or injury you accidentally cause while you’re working away from your beauty salon.

If you want to cover the treatments you carry out while working away from your salon, you’ll have to include treatment cover too.

    Employers’ liability insurance

If you have someone working under your supervision at your salon, including full-time and part-time staff, apprentices and self-employed beauticians renting a chair, you’re legally required to have this cover.

    Contents cover

If you own or rent your own beauty salon, you can cover your contents in case they’re damaged, stolen or lost. If you don't have contents cover, you’d have to pay the cost of replacing them on your own.

When you select contents cover, you can also add cover for the following:

    • Stock

    • Fixtures and fittings

    • Tenants' improvements

    • Your shop front

    • Loss of money

    • Goods in transit

    Buildings insurance

If you own or rent your own beauty salon, buildings insurance can cover the cost of repairing or rebuilding your premises in the event of accidental loss, destruction or damage.

    Business interruption cover

If your beauty business has to close after an insured incident at your salon, like a fire, flood or forced entry, we’ll pay you for loss of profit and continuing overheads, including your employees’ wages.

    Business equipment cover

This’ll cover you in the event of theft, loss or damage to your portable equipment and accessories that you use away from your salon, for example your expensive makeup brushes.

    Legal expenses cover

With legal expenses cover, you can protect your beauty business from the costs of legal proceedings such as breach of contract, employment and VAT disputes. .

    Option 2: AXA Business Insurance

With our standard business insurance, you can choose from public liability, employers’ liability and professional indemnity insurance, plus a range of optional extras.

What can I include with business insurance?

    Public liability and employers’ liability

When you choose public or employers’ liability for your beauty business, you’ll be able to add the following covers:

    • Business equipment

    • Personal accident – capital benefits

    • Personal accident – weekly benefits

    Professional indemnity

As a professional beautician or beauty consultant, you provide advice and a specialist service to your clients day in, day out. And they could make a claim against you if they think you’ve made a mistake that’s caused them to lose money.

Professional indemnity insurance will protect you against these claims – and you’ll also be able to add the following optional extras:

    • Breach of confidentiality

    • Defamation

    • Infringement of copyright

    • Dishonesty of employees

    • Loss of documents

    • Court attendance costs

    • Bodily injury arising from breach of professional duty
