(07/09/2005) AXA launches whiplash rehabilitation service

AXA has announced today (Friday 26 August) that it has successfully launched the next critical stage in the development of its E-trading offering.

AXA has launched a new approach for the deployment of rehabilitation services to whiplash claimants, using the skills of its in-house nursing teams in partnership with a national physiotherapy provider.

The pilot scheme will operate on appropriate motor injury claims reported from September 2005 onwards, with a review of performance due in early 2006. For those types of claims outside the pilot group, AXA will continue to work with its other suppliers for rehabilitation treatment in parallel with the new initiative.

The new pilot scheme will mean that all appropriate cases will be reviewed by experienced claims handlers who will ensure early decision making on legal liability. Where legal liability falls to AXA, claimants will be referred to skilled nurse case managers who will advise on the most appropriate rehabilitative treatment.

Those injured persons requiring physiotherapy will be referred into the UK wide network of practitioners. The precise nature and extent of treatment required will be governed by the individual physiotherapist, working to their existing professional code of practice.

Matthew Scott, head of liability claims and professional services, AXA Insurance commented:

"We have been working on the development of this innovation since the spring, in partnership with our sister company AXA PPP Occupational Health Services.

"With this initiative we have a genuine opportunity to engage with claimants and their representatives to ensure that our prime focus is on the injured party's speedy recovery as a core part of the compensation process. Clinical independence will be maintained whilst ensuring very effective support for the claimant through the rehabilitation process."

Dr Mark Simpson, managing director, AXA PPP Occupational Health Services commented:

"I am very excited by this research initiative which uniquely combines nurse case management assessment and support, rapid intervention treatment and our extensive data management capabilities. Our nurses' occupational health expertise makes them ideally suited to assess the impact of the whiplash injury on the individual's working and daily living ability.

"Overall I hope this pilot will support nurse case management as an integral component of the accident management process rather than an intervention deployed only in catastrophic injuries."
