W Stephens & Sons: when business runs in the family

Starting up

8 September 2017

All business start with a story. And for Chris Stephens of W Stephens & Sons, his story starts with a bike…

In 1945, Chris’ grandfather bought a pushbike to help him transport his tools around while looking for work. From these humble beginnings, the business has grown and has passed down from generation to generation of the Stephens family, until Chris took the reins in 2002.

After leaving school and studying, Chris decided to leave university and follow his father and grandfather into the family business.

We believe every business has a story to tell. That’s why we caught up with Chris to find out about his biggest business inspiration, his hopes for the legacy his business will leave behind and what it’s like being part of a truly generational family business.

Can you tell us a little about the history of the business?
Who is your biggest inspiration?
What’s been the hardest part of running a small business?
What would you say to young people thinking of following in your footsteps?
What advice would you give to a fellow small business?
And what’s next for W Stephens & Sons?
