Social media is a great place to connect with existing clients and attract new ones, but it's also incredibly useful for staying on top of the latest beauty trends.

When you're a beautician, it's really important to keep your finger on the pulse. After all, you don't want to be put in a position where a client asks for a style that you haven't heard of yet. Social media puts all of the latest hair and beauty styles in easy reach – you just have to know where to look. Think of it as a pre-emptive form of beauty salon insurance.

The rise of hair and beauty online

There are more trends popping up than ever before thanks to the clever use of social media. Beauty artists, talented amateurs and celebs are constantly posting their latest looks on YouTube, Pinterest and Instagram. Dove recently found that 30% of women base their beauty purchasing decisions on social media, with vloggers and bloggers playing a key role as influencers.

Social media campaigns for the beauty industry

Your business's social media pages are the perfect place to show off your work. As well as using the old guard (Facebook and Twitter) it's also important to seize new opportunities. Instagram Stories, for example, is a good way to show off your team and your work – our tutorial on making Instagram videos is worth a watch.

Demonstrating your work doesn't just encourage people to book an appointment – it also offers the chance for customers to give you valuable feedback. You can easily see what kinds of style are most popular with your client base by checking how many 'likes' each one gets. This lets you focus on exploring similar styles and perfecting your technique, rather than going in a direction that your customers may not like.

Staying ahead of the curve

Follow major influencers (and your competitors) and you'll soon be up to date with what's currently fashionable, as well as being able to predict which the makeup trends that are likely to become big. There are some excellent makeup artists to follow on Instagram such as Robin Black, Lisa Eldridge and Linda Gradin. Celebrities like Taylor Swift, bloggers like Chiara Ferragni and models like Poppy Delevingne are also major Instagram trendsetters worth watching.

While trends may come and go, business stays the same. That's why it's so important to have retail insurance in place to protect you and your customers.
