Business insurance for hairdressers and barbers

Whether you’re the owner of a hair and beauty salon, or a self-employed stylist renting a chair in your local barber shop, your clients trust you to make them look and feel great.

But when things go wrong – like a member of staff being injured at work or a thief stealing your valuable hairdressing equipment – who can you trust to protect you?

With a 97% customer service rating1 and an award-winning claims team that pay out on 92% of claims2, you can rely on us to look after your hairdressing business – so you can get on with looking after your clients.

Why do I need insurance for my hairdressing business?

Hairdressing may not seem like the most dangerous job in the world. But in busy environments like hair salons and barber shops, things can go seriously wrong.

Here are some examples of the types of incidents that could potentially cost you dearly if you don’t have business insurance in place:

    • One of your clients or a member of staff slips on your wet floor and injures themselves as they’re leaving your salon
    • A member of staff could get electrocuted or burnt from using wet or faulty electrical equipment
    • Your barber shop could be burgled, leading to thousands of pounds worth of expensive hair equipment and accessories being stolen
    • A customer’s hair could be damaged because a treatment in your salon goes wrong – leaving her with a burned scalp or bald patches

What type of hairdressers do we cover?

Whether you run your own high street salon or you’re a freelance hairdresser that rents a chair, we’ve got you covered.

Thanks to our range of business insurance products, which you can tailor to meet your needs, we can provide cover for the following types of hairdressing businesses:

    • Hairdressing salons
    • Barber shops
    • Freelance, mobile and self-employed hairdressers and barbers
    • Hair and beauty consultants
    • Hair and beauty salons

What covers do I need for my hairdressing business?

At AXA, we give you the freedom to style your insurance to meet your needs.

You can choose from our standard business insurance, which can include public liability, employers’ liability and professional indemnity insurance, or you can opt for AXA Shop Insurance, where you can also add the likes of buildings and contents insurance.

Of course, the choice is entirely up to you – so here are some of the covers you can choose from to help you decide.

    AXA Shop Insurance

With our shop insurance for retailers, public liability is the only cover that’s included as standard. From there, simply pick and choose the covers you want – and cut the ones you don’t.

    Public liability insurance

If a customer slips on a wet floor as they’re leaving your shop, or if you spill hair dye on a client’s clothing, you could be liable for an injury or property damage claim.

But with public liability insurance in place, we’ll cover your legal liability for these claims.

With AXA Shop Insurance, public liability cover is included as standard.

    Treatment cover

If a treatment at your salon or barber shop goes wrong, resulting in a customer being left with injuries, they could make a compensation claim against you.

But if you add treatment cover, we’ll cover your legal liability for damage or injury caused by physical or cosmetic treatments.

    Work away cover

Ever work away from your salon, for example going to clients’ houses to cut their hair? This will cover your legal liability for any damage or injury you accidentally cause.

If you want to cover the treatments you carry out while working away from your salon, you’ll have to include treatment cover too.

    Employers’ liability insurance

If you have someone working for you, even if they’re just helping out in your salon at weekends, you’ll most likely need employers’ liability cover – most employers are legally required to have it in place.

    Contents cover

Contents cover can help you replace the contents of your shop, like basins, chairs and mirrors, and employees’ personal belongings, if they’re damaged, lost or stolen.

When you select contents cover, you can also add cover for the following:

    • Stock
    • Fixtures and fittings
    • Tenants' improvements
    • Your shop front
    • Loss of money
    • Goods in transit

    Buildings insurance

If you have your own salon or barber shop, you may need buildings insurance too.

It’ll cover the structure of your premises, as well as fixtures, fittings and improvements, in the event of accidental loss, destruction or damage.

    Business interruption cover

With business interruption cover in place, we’ll pay you for loss of profit and continuing overheads, including your employees’ wages, if you suffer a loss of income after an insured incident at your salon.

    Business equipment cover

If your expensive hairdressing equipment or accessories were lost, stolen or damaged away from your salon, how much would it set you back to replace them? With business equipment cover in place, you don’t have to worry.

    Legal expenses cover

Protect your hairdressing business from the costs of legal proceedings such as breach of contract, data protection, employment and VAT disputes.

    AXA Business Insurance

With our standard business insurance, you can choose from public liability, employers’ liability and professional indemnity insurance, plus a range of optional extras.

    Public liability and employers’ liability

When you choose public or employers’ liability, you’ll also be able to add the following covers:

    • Business equipment
    • Personal accident – capital benefits
    • Personal accident – weekly benefits

    Professional indemnity

Because you provide advice and a service to your clients, they could make a claim against you if they think you’ve made a mistake that’s caused them to lose money.

When you take out professional indemnity insurance, you can also add the following optional extras:

    • Breach of confidentiality
    • Defamation
    • Infringement of copyright
    • Dishonesty of employees
    • Loss of documents
    • Court attendance costs
    • Bodily injury arising from breach of professional duty
