Stay safe
Do not go near water: its depth can surprise you and there may be hazards in it. Flood water is likely to be dirty and contaminated, so avoid contact if possible (if unavoidable, wash and disinfect hands afterwards).
Follow the advice from emergency services. If told to evacuate, do so immediately.
Protect your property
Before flooding, if it is safe to do so, close flood gates and put down sand bags to stop water from entering your property.
Before leaving your property, unplug electrical devices and turn off the gas, electricity and water.
If you have time, move vulnerable items upstairs or to higher areas, including personal or business paperwork and items of sentimental value like photographs. You may want to ensure curtains and other furnishings don’t touch the floor.
If appropriate, ventilate the property by opening windows.
