The AXA Wealth Kilimanjaro Challenge 2011, confirmed to take place in June this year, will see AXA Wealth support 50 climbers, including rugby star David Barnes, scale for charity the world's highest freestanding mountain.

The AXA Wealth Kilimanjaro Challenge 2011 will offer a team of around 50 climbers the opportunity of a lifetime - to reach the summit of the highest peak in Africa. The trek's ambassador is Jason Leonard, the world's most capped prop, and the trio of 'lead' climbers are: David Barnes, Bath Rugby prop and Chairman of the Rugby Players Association; Andy Blyth, ex Sale Sharks player; and Major Alan Tindale of the Royal Logistics Corps who plays for the Veterans Team.

The rest of the team will include other rugby professionals, IFAs, sports supporters and charity representatives, and to show its commitment to the cause, AXA Wealth is even sending one of its own intrepid managers, Nick Stokes, to scale the dizzy heights.

Standing at nearly 6,000 metres above sea level in Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest freestanding mountain in the world, and the highest mountain in Africa. Only 40% of people who try and climb it succeed - the conditions are extreme, changing from jungle to moorland, lunar and polar landscapes, with temperatures plummeting from 30 degrees Celsius to minus 20.

The climbers aim to raise over £100,000 for three chosen charities; the Rugby Football Union Injured Players Foundation, the Rugby Players Association Benevolent Fund and Help for Heroes.

Mike Kellard, chief executive officer, AXA Wealth, said: "When we were first approached with the offer to be title sponsor of this year's Kilimanjaro Challenge, it took literally about 10 seconds to say yes! The opportunity to support not one but three well deserving charities, whilst supporting such an exciting and frankly ambitious challenge, was one we would not have missed.

"The challenge is considered by many climbers as one of the most difficult, so The AXA Wealth Kilimanjaro Challenge 2011 will certainly be a test of skills, teamwork and mental strength."

David Barnes, Bath rugby prop and lead climber, says: "I am proud to be part of the trek team, and for all of us it will be a major challenge. In true rugby tradition it will be great to take it on as a squad and do it for the good of those less fortunate than ourselves."
