  • Keep items off the ground where possible, especially items easily damaged by water. Remember the water may be contaminated with pollutants.
  • Lightweight and portable items should preferably be moved to upper floors if possible.
  • Make sure you protect your vital documents and take them to a safe place (this can include passports, driving licences, insurance documents, company documents and personal effects such as photographs etc).
  • Be careful what you dispose of without notifying your insurer. If you have to dispose of damaged carpets and the like, ensure that you have taken photographs and retained a portion of the damaged item to allow verification of the product’s quality.
  • Photograph the extent of any damage - this may assist any claim you make. Alternatively you may be able to capture video using your mobile phone.
